ABOUT HIPS

What Does HIPS Stand For?

HIPS stands for hidden in plain sight – because that’s exactly where sexual violence and its victims are. Sexual violence is not a rare tragedy – it’s an epidemic.  And for far too long, it has thrived in silence whilst existing right Infront of us.

HIPS will continue to expose this uncomfortable truth, educate children and equip communities to prevent sexual violence so the next generation learn from education and not experience.

What We Do

HIPS deliver trauma-informed sexual violence prevention and response training to communities to create safe spaces for difficult conversations. Through powerful, tailored workshops, HIPS provides the knowledge, tools and encouragement needed to prevent sexual abuse.

Why We Exist

Victims don’t have a “look.” They are our children, our friends, our colleagues. They are the teachers guiding our kids, the doctors healing our bodies, the lawyers fighting for justice, the leaders shaping our communities, the neighbours we trust. They are the ‘funny’ ones, the ‘loud’ ones, the ‘shy’ ones, the ‘confident’ ones, the ‘successful’ one -They are all around us. Abuse doesn’t care about status, colour, or wealth. It doesn’t ask permission. It crosses every line we think is safe, shattering lives in ways we often cannot see – and in ways we may never imagine.

Perpetrators don’t have a ‘look’ either. They can be anyone – someone trusted, admired, or overlooked. They hide in plain sight, manipulating, deceiving, and silencing those around them. Abuse is not isolated to the “other” or the “different.” It thrives where we assume safety.

It’s an uncomfortable truth, but accepting it is the first step toward change.

We exist to face this reality head-on. We empower families, schools, and communities with the knowledge, tools, and courage to protect children. We dismantle the manipulative tactics perpetrators rely on, challenge the silence that allows abuse to continue, and fight to create a safer world for the next generation.

The silence, fear, shame and lack of accountability and justice, have allowed perpetrators to act with sickening confidence, time and time again. The statistics continue to show a terrifying truth: too many perpetrators continue to evade justice so we are fully committed to dismantling the manipulative control predators hold.

This stops with us.

We refuse to let this remain a taboo subject. Sexual abuse destroys lives every day – lives forever scarred. We will work tirelessly, to expose this hidden epidemic, speaking with confidence and courage because children right now are waiting for us to rise up and be their advocates.

Statistics:

  • 1 in 10 children are sexually abused before age 16
That’s over 500,000 children every year –  enough to fill Wembley Stadium five times
  • 1 in 6 girls and 1 in 20 boys sexually abused before age 16
Girls are more likely to be targeted
  • Most children know their abuser
  • Over 90% of children who are abused are abused by someone they know and trust.
  • Around one-third of recorded physical child sexual abuse offences occurred within the family environment.
  • Only 1 in 5 cases are ever reported
  • Many victims don’t speak out until adulthood — or ever.
